That was just the ticket

As Robin's wonderful father used to say "That was just the ticket" and I have to say that about this weekend. Back before surgery we had planned a get away weekend for the 4th and were able to still take it. On Saturday morning we drove down to the Mobile Bay area and stayed in Spanish Fort. It was such a wonderful weekend.

We started with a tour of the USS Alabama battleship and then toured the USS Drum submarine. We ate some wonderful seafood, hit a flea market (Robin's favorite), swam in the pool. Sunday morning we took Maria for her first look at the ocean. She was not able to get in and play due to her chest still healing but she loved walking in the sand and looking at the water. We visited the outlet malls (again a favorite for Robin) got to visit with some old friends for a couple of hours. More pool time, more great food, well you get the idea.

The real great part of all of this was how wonderfully Maria did. She laughed like we have not seen her laugh lately. She played, she smiled, she had fun. She was not able to get into the pool and be submerged but we had approval for her to float around. So we purchased a big pink boat and she was able to float around the pool while the other girls swam etc. She absolutely loved it.

The other cool thing was her appetite. She had shrimp, steak, a grilled chicken salad, chicken fingers, spaghetti, you name it. She was great about picking something different every meal.

We had one little incident where she did not communicate and just cried but it was late at the fireworks and she was likely just very tired. Once we got back to the hotel she was fine again.

So as I said this weekend was just the ticket for all of us. We had so much fun. We wish the boys had been with us but maybe next time. Aaron is in the Dominican Republic on a mission trip. Andrew and Stephen had to work this weekend.

The other good news is that Maria's arm appears to be healing nicely now. We have another week before meeting the plastic surgeon and our prayer is that by then it will be healed enough that he will leave it alone. We will keep you posted on how it is doing.

Happy Independence Day

  1. Great news all around! The beach! What wonderful medicine! Yall were in our stomping grounds down there! We both grew up in Mobile! Did you see any tar balls or oil? My sis was down in Gulf Shores a couple of weeks ago and said it was GREAT!
I'm so happy to hear Maria is recuperating well and getting back to her old self! Thank you Jesus!
Hugs to you all....maybe we could get together in the next few weeks? Kevin's next heart cath is Aug. 16 and then we'll know something about his Glenn procedure. Definitely want the two of them to get back together before that!
